“So, what was all that about?” Bria asks, wrapping her arm in mine.

“I don’t know what you mean.” I shrug. “He’s just trying to be nice because you and Tino are all loved-up and he’s stuck with me.”

“Didn’t seem that way to me. I saw the side-eye you were giving him.”

“I was not giving him any side-eye.”

“And the way he looked when I mentioned Matteo. Girl, he’s got it bad for you.”

“Anton Proetti has absolutely not got it bad for me,” I whisper. “He hates me, he’s hated me for a long time. And he’s only being nice because of Tino, not because of anything else. He still hates me.”

“If that’s what you need to think to get through the day, you go for it.” She chuckles as we head down the corridor towards the arts department, the route becoming more familiar each day.

Nobody even looks up as we join, taking what is quickly becoming our corner of the sofa.

“How do you all get here so quickly?” I ask nobody in particular, conscious that we haven’t exactly dragged our feet, and yet, everyone else is already sat around chatting and we are the last to join.

“We send someone for lunch, no special trip required,” Leah answers around Bria, her elbow resting familiarly on her leg. “Nice of you to join us.”

“Oh, well, that would make sense, I guess.” I shrug. “And thanks for the invitation.”

“Door’s always open, even to traitors like this one.” She smiles, nudging Bria’s leg.

“Hey, I’m not a traitor. We aren’t at war,” Bria scoffs.

“We certainly aren’t.” Tia laughs, holding her hands out for Stefano. “Come on, get some damn music picked. I’ve had enough of this week already.”

Tia is already dancing in the centre of the room before the music starts. A few other people join her and one couple work on a routine to one side as Matteo enters, his hands full.

“Here, let me give you a hand with that,” I offer, skirting around the dancers to get to him.

I manage to catch the sandwich platter before it slides off and lands on the floor, righting it and following him to the tables.

“So, this is why we are always the last ones here.” I chuckle.

“Yeah, there’s plenty so if you want something, just help yourself.” Matteo smiles as he lays the food out.

“Leah just explained but we’ve already been, thank you. There’s a salad box with my name on it.” I chuckle awkwardly.

“So, you’re enjoying dancing lunches then?” he asks, looking around the room.

“Ah, yeah, it’s nice to do something different. It mostly kept me away from one of the girls that wasn’t being very nice to me but it’s really comfortable here. Nobody cares.”

“Why would they? Nobody knows you, who are we to judge?”

Well isn’t that the million dollar question?

There was no judgement from Bria when she saw the state of me last week. No raise of her eyebrows or looking down her nose. She just scooped me up, made sure I could get
